MIND REFRESHMENTS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

Hobbies for senior citizens, exercises for senior citizens, caring for senior citizens

All those who reach the age of 65 are considered as Senior Citizens, but some of them dont look or feel like 65 since they keep their mind and body healthy by keeping both occupied. Physical fitness and mind freshness play important roles in our life. If either of them is not good we become weak .Keeping both fit is an art.
Mind has to keep fresh by giving work to it everyday. We can either give them some work like reading books, reciting poems, singing songs, telling stories, which will keep the mind fresh since it needs to think and act. Once you retire from work you dont have a routine work in your life and so tend to become lethargic so if we dont keep ourselves occupied we tend to get forgetfulness and brain related diseases like dementia, and anxiety. In order to avoid getting these diseases in the old age they have to be looked after carefully.
Memory is initial symptom of aging. When there is a loss of memory, there starts both the physical and mental stress. Hence we need to be very shrewd on the memory of the seniors. Senior Citizens can be kept engaged by playing games with them. Games like Bingo, Scrabble, Uno will tune their memory and keep the brain active. If they dont have anybody to give them company to play, they can play solo games like solitaire, cross word puzzles, sudoku etc. Each game has its own value. It is up to us to use it.
Cross word puzzles and Sudoku are brain teasing games. By coming across many new words our brain gets activated and keeps thinking and try to remember them.
The Senior citizens can be taken outside and then after coming home asked to give a list of the things they saw on their way home, by doing this they think and keep the mind fresh. If they cant go out, we can ask them to enter a room and ask them to tell what they saw in the room.
Depending on the interest of the person concerned they can be made to play what they want and keep their mind refreshed. Even after retirement it is always better to have a set of pattern to follow each day so that you dont have a blank mind getting up from bed. When we are retired and dont go to office but fit enough to go out we can visit a library or a mall for an hour or so, so that we can meet some people there. Mind occupation is very vital as physical fitness. If a person keeps both mind and body fresh by doing some activity within his limits he can lead a very happy life.
